Even though I live in one of the most beautiful places in the country, at times it can feel a little claustraphobic and the desire to ‘escape’ within my immediate periphery seeps in. Sometimes a jaunt around the back streets of Bridport can do the trick but if I want to properly ‘escape’ there is no finer place than Cogden Beach. I have mentioned this amazing spot in the past but it felt like a reminder was required…
Cogden is where all 18 miles of the magnificent Chesil beach begins; the largest shingle ridge beach in the world. Cogden Beach feels like a ‘secret’ beach yet is just beyond Burton Bradstock and very easy to find. Owned by the National Trust you can do a 1 hr circular walk which would give you a great aspect of Chesil and the full Cogden experience.
The beach is always covered in sea cabbage but in late Spring, wild flowers (yellow poppies flourish) fill the shingle gaps and there is magic in the air. Chesil alone has a surreal feel to it but the combination of this lunar like landscape with Cogden’s flora and fauna makes it something quite special. We have never been there and seen more than one or two people in passing so it gives you a huge sense of escape. Lie amongst the sea cabbage and breathe in the salty air and you will transport yourself to a far off planet, clear your head and reboot your senses.
On Saturday, the air was swirling with a wonderful sea fret which only added to the experience. We collected sea cabbage leaves to add to morning green smoothies and to use as an ingredient for my dear friend Tiffany’s sea cabbage salad recipe from her super inspiring blog The Mirabelle Tree.

- Cogden Beach is signposted just off the Burton Bradstock to Abbotsbury road.
- Park at the top car park and walk a short distance down onto the beach. The X53 bus stops here too!
- No facilities but dogs welcome (on leads near areas with nesting birds).
