According to the modern oracle Wiki ‘A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase the knowledge of the participants through conversation.’ Add literature and the scene is set.
The inspiring hosts are writer and facilitator Jan Lane (The Writing Room, Lyme Regis) and hospitality pro Lyn Martin (Dorset House). Together their expertise provides the structure of The Literary Salon, Lyme Regis. I went to the pilot and can vouch for the fact that the above criteria were met – we amused one another and we certainly refined our taste and knowledge of literature through diverse and flowing conversation. Plus the delicious cocktails and canapés made it all feel rather special and unique.
The evening took the form of an introduction; each of us then shared one of our favourite texts followed by a discussion on its meaning, feeling and intention. Finishing with feedback on how the evening had unfurled. The gossip and chuckling a few cocktails in, all added to make it an inspirational, stimulating and knowledgeable event!
The launch night is on World Gin Day and the theme is food and drink in literature, fiction and non – so every excuse to get out and get gin ‘n’ culture. The perfect cocktail.
